Nottingham station
Nottingham station is the city’s main railway hub and a tram stop. It sits on the edge of Nottingham’s centre and is the busiest station in the county and a major one in the Midlands. It is served by East Midlands Railway, CrossCountry and Northern trains, and by Nottingham Express Transit (NET) trams.
History and buildings
The station began in 1848 as Nottingham and was rebuilt in 1904 by the Midland Railway in an Edwardian Baroque style. The entrance was moved to Carrington Street, and the building became a landmark of red brick, terracotta and decorative metalwork. It later became part of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, then nationalised in 1948. After privatization, ownership passed to Network Rail and it is now managed by East Midlands Railway.
Redevelopment and tram integration
From 2011 to 2015 the station underwent a major redevelopment to bring rail and tram together. A new multi-storey car park opened in 2012, and a large concourse was added with shops and better facilities. The tram system was extended to run over the station on a new bridge, the Karlsruhe Friendship Bridge, and a new Nottingham Station tram stop opened on 27 July 2015. This stop sits above the railway platforms and connects directly to the station concourse, replacing the old Station Street tram stop.
Layout and services
The railway side has seven platform faces across two island platforms and a side platform. The tram stop is elevated above the railway and has its own two platform faces, with crossings at either end linking to the rail concourse. The station is a gateway for NET lines 1 (Hucknall to Toton Lane) and 2 (Phoenix Park to Clifton South), which share tracks through the city centre. Trams run frequently, with up to about 16 per hour on the busy central section.
Notable events
In January 2018 a fire damaged the new station area. It caused serious disruption, and investigations followed, with arrests made and later sentences given.
Today, Nottingham station combines a busy rail hub with a modern tram interchange, making it easy to travel by train or tram across the city and region.
