Marmolada Glacier
Marmolada Glacier is the only glacier in the Dolomites, located on Marmolada mountain in the Belluno province of northern Italy. During World War I, Italian and Austrian forces fought over the mountain, and Austrian soldiers built shelters inside tunnels in the glacier, creating an “ice city.” A World War I museum, the Museo della Grande Guerra in Marmolada, sits in the valley below. On July 3, 2022, a large piece of ice broke off the glacier and 11 mountaineers were killed.
