David Wu Ject-key
David Wu Ject-key (伍澤樞) was a Chinese‑American painter born on October 1, 1890, in Zhongshan, Guangdong, China. He studied at the Grand Central School of Art in New York and became known for oil paintings in the Realist movement. His notable works include Desolation and General Officer.
He was married to Danish artist Elsie Kjaersgaard. Wu Ject-key died on April 17, 1968, in Boston at age 77. Several memorial awards carry his and Elsie’s names, given by groups such as the American Watercolor Society, the National Association of Women Artists, the National Society of Painters in Acrylic, and the Salmagundi Club.
A small anecdote from his story: after his death, Elsie asked if the Chung Shan Association cemetery was only for men; she was told it is a cemetery for Chinese people, and she was welcomed as one of them.
