Francisco Vega de Lamadrid
Francisco Vega de Lamadrid, known as Kiko Vega, is a Mexican politician from the National Action Party (PAN). He served as the 15th Governor of Baja California from November 1, 2013, to October 31, 2019, taking over from José Guadalupe Osuna Millán and later followed by Jaime Bonilla Valdez.
Earlier in his career, Vega was the 17th Municipal President (mayor) of Tijuana from November 1, 1998, to October 31, 2001. He also served in Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies for the LXI Legislature, from 2009 to 2012.
Born on May 22, 1955, in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, Vega studied business administration at the Centro de Enseñanza Técnica y Superior, graduating in 1978. In 2011, while a federal deputy, he announced his candidacy for governor. He won the PAN primary on March 10, 2013, defeating Héctor Guillermo Osuna Jaime, and the Baja California governor election was held on July 7, 2013. His main opponent was Fernando Castro Trenti of the PRI. Vega had support from the PRD and New Alliance, while Trenti was backed by the PVEM, the Labor Party, and PRI. Vega won by about 3 percentage points, 47% to 44%.
