Calamities of Authors
Calamities of Authors (1812) is a nonfiction work by Isaac D'Israeli, included in his Miscellanies. It looks at the troubles writers face. In its opening chapters, “Authors by Profession” and “The Case of Authors Stated,” it mirrors the idea and wording of James Ralph’s 1758 pamphlet The Case of Authors by Profession or Trade, Stated, especially on how opposition writers fare after changes of government. Some scholars believe D’Israeli did not acknowledge this influence, even though contemporaries attributed Ralph’s authorship to him.
