Downton is a village and civil parish in southern Wiltshire, England, located on the River Avon about six miles southeast of Salisbury. The parish sits near the Hampshire border and close to the New Forest. It includes the villages of Wick and Charlton-All-Saints and the small historic place of Witherington. The Trafalgar Park estate has absorbed the former settlement of Standlynch.

Downton has several notable historic buildings, including the parish church of St Laurence, Trafalgar House, and two other houses that are Grade I listed. The village sits on the east bank of the Avon, with Wick on the opposite bank connected by the A338 road that runs north to Bournemouth and south toward the New Forest. Downton’s history goes back to ancient times, with evidence of Neolithic, Iron Age, Roman and Saxon activity. A Roman villa was found nearby, and some mosaics are now in Salisbury Museum. Clearbury Ring, an Iron Age hillfort, is in the northwest part of the parish.

The Domesday Book records Downton as a large settlement, and a motte-and-bailey castle once stood near the river. Through the centuries the area grew and changed, with the Moot House built around 1700 and later become part of the Trafalgar Park estate. The Manor House near the parish church is a Grade I listed building, and the estate at Standlynch was renamed Trafalgar Park in memory of Nelson’s victories. The artist John Constable visited Downton in 1820, and some of his work is kept in the British Museum.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries Downton saw social and industrial changes, including an emigration of villagers to Upper Canada in 1836 and the opening of Downton Agricultural College (1880–1906). A local railway, the Salisbury and Dorset Junction, opened in 1866 but closed in 1964. The village also played a part in motorsport in the 1960s and 1970s through Downton Engineering Works. In the 20th century Wick grew as part of the Downton area.

Today Downton has a busy mix of history and modern life. The parish is served by St Laurence’s Church, a large 12th‑century church that is Grade I listed and part of the Forest and Avon team ministry. There have been Baptist, Methodist and Roman Catholic places of worship in the area, and today there are Downton Baptist Church, Downton Methodist Church, and the Good Shepherd Catholic chapel nearby. The River Avon can flood the area, and major flood defenses were built after a serious flood in 2002.

Governance is by a fifteen‑member parish council with two wards: Downton and Charlton-All-Saints. The parish is part of Wiltshire Council for wider services and falls within the Salisbury parliamentary constituency. Downton’s economy has moved from farming and crafts to include local businesses and light industry, with the Downton Business Centre housing Hop Back Brewery and Help for Heroes Trading. The village has amenities like a village hall, three pubs (the Bull Hotel, the Goat, and the Wooden Spoon), a café called The Borough, and the Downton Leisure Centre, home to Downton F.C.

Every year, Downton hosts the Cuckoo Fair around May Day, a village fête with roots in its rural past. The Avon Valley Path also passes through the area, offering a scenic walking route. The primary school is Downton CofE Primary School, established in 1895, and the Trafalgar School at Downton (opened in 1964 in Wick) was renamed Trafalgar School in 2005.
