Bragg, Texas
Bragg is a ghost town in Hardin County, Texas, in the Big Thicket forest area of the southeast. Also called Bragg Station, it thrived in the early 1900s about 10 miles west of Kountze. It was named after Confederate general Braxton Bragg and grew around a railroad junction built by the Santa Fe Railroad in 1902. The railroad carried lumber and other supplies for oil work near Beaumont. Later, the oil industry moved its shipping and the railroad was abandoned. The local post office that served workers closed in 1914. The rail line from Bragg Station south to Saratoga was dismantled in 1934. Today Bragg Station is mainly a small farming community, and a dirt road there is a scenic drive in the county park. The Ghost Road to Saratoga is linked to a local legend of a ghost light called the Light of Saratoga.
