The Eye and the Finger
The Eye and the Finger is a 1944 collection of fantasy, horror, and science fiction stories by American writer Donald Wandrei. It was his first book published by Arkham House and appeared in a small run of 1,617 copies. The 21 stories were originally printed in magazines such as Weird Tales, Esquire, Argosy, and Astounding Stories, chosen by Wandrei as his best work at the time. The dust jacket artwork is by his brother, Howard Wandrei.
The book is now quite hard to find and was out of print by 1946. It has never been reprinted in its original form, but all the stories are included in the Fedogan & Bremer omnibus volumes Don’t Dream: The Collected Fantasy and Horror of Donald Wandrei and Colossus: The Collected Science Fiction of Donald Wandrei. Chapter XII of The Web of Easter Island is a somewhat rewritten version of the story “A Fragment of a Dream.” The collection received mixed notice from critics; a New York Times reviewer said Wandrei can horrify, but the effect is sometimes too direct and may not last.
