Betano
Betano is a village and suco (local administrative area) in the southwest of Manufahi District, Timor-Leste. In 2004, about 4,577 people lived there. The Betano Power Station, located in Betano, is Timor-Leste’s largest electricity plant by capacity and supplies power to the south coast.
Historically, Betano was part of a Timorese kingdom, the Kingdom of We Hale. During World War II, Betano Bay was the site of Allied actions: on 25 September 1942, the 2/4th Independent Company was landed there, and HMAS Voyager became grounded in the bay and was later blown up and scuttled. On 1 December 1942, HMAS Armidale was sunk by Japanese aircraft while evacuating Allied soldiers.
