Beacon Royal
Beacon Royal, also known as Beacon Court, is an Art Deco rental block in Yeoville, Johannesburg. Built in 1934 during a time of growth after the Great Depression, it stands at 55 Grafton Road / Louis Botha Avenue (stand 1044) and has five floors. It was designed for PP Weisholtz by the architectural brothers Obel and Obel, who also designed Astor Mansions and Circle Court nearby. The building was hijacked in 2002 and fell into disrepair, with no electricity or water. In 2004, Emerald Sky Trading ZA bought it, evicted the hijackers via a court order, and refurbished the block. It was declared a heritage site in 2011 by the Gauteng Provincial Heritage Resources Authority for its cultural significance.
