X12 and EDIFACT are two main EDI standards used for exchanging business data electronically. In 1979, ANSI created ASC X12 to develop universal EDI rules for many industries. In 1986, UN/ECE approved UN/EDIFACT, the international EDI standard for administration, commerce, and transport, maintained by UN/CEFACT through its EDIFACT Working Group. Today, X12 is mainly used in the United States and by US organizations worldwide, while most other countries use EDIFACT messages.
