Bad Kitty (novel)
Bad Kitty is a 2006 young adult novel by Michele Jaffe. It follows Jasmine Callihan, a seventeen-year-old who is on vacation in Las Vegas with her family, trying to impress a cute guy named Jack and prove she can be a detective. When a three-legged cat named Mad Joe attacks her, Jasmine becomes caught up in a murder mystery about Len Phillips. She teams up with her stylish best friends, Polly and Roxy, and Tom, who loves Polly, to uncover the truth and figure out if Jack is a friend or foe.
Jasmine is tall and of mixed Irish and Jamaican heritage. She is top of her class and dreams of becoming a detective after her mother’s death. Her father is overprotective, while her stepmother Sherri! is kind and likeable. The story is set around the Venetian Hotel pool, with plenty of fashion and humor.
Polly is obsessed with fashion and drives a pink van called the Pink Pearl; Roxy is glamorous and bold; Tom is charming and a good friend who also has a crush on Polly. The reception to Bad Kitty was mostly positive, with praise for the characters, though some reviews noted the plot could be convoluted and Jasmine’s voice sometimes grated. The novel was followed by a sequel, Kitty Kitty (2008), and a Bad Kitty: Catnipped graphic novel from TokyoPop.
