East Godavari district (1925–2022)
East Godavari district (1925–2022) was a district in the Coastal Andhra region of Andhra Pradesh, India. Its capital was Kakinada. It covered about 12,805 square kilometers and had a population of 5,154,296 according to the 2011 census, making it the most populous district in the state at that time. Kakinada and Rajahmundry were its major cities.
Origin and history:
- The area traces back to 1823 when the District of Rajahmundry was created under the Madras Presidency. In 1859 it was reorganized into Godavari and Krishna districts. Rajahmundry remained the headquarters of Godavari district until 1925, when it was split into East Godavari (headquarters Kakinada) and West Godavari (headquarters Eluru).
- In 1959, the Bhadrachalam revenue division (including Bhadrachalam and Naguru taluks) moved from East Godavari to Khammam district.
- After the 2014 reorganization of Andhra Pradesh, several mandals such as Chinturu and Kunavaram were returned to East Godavari.
Reorganization in 2022:
- On 4 April 2022, East Godavari district was reorganized into three new districts: Kakinada (headquarters Kakinada), Konaseema (headquarters Amalapuram), and East Godavari (headquarters Rajahmundry). The old East Godavari district ceased to exist in its previous form.
