Auburn Public Library (Maine)
Auburn Public Library is the public library for Auburn, Maine, located at 49 Spring Street. The main building opened in 1903 thanks to a donation from Andrew Carnegie and was designed in Renaissance style by architect William R. Miller. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
The library was expanded in 1956 and again in 2006 to serve more readers; today it is about twice the size of the original 1904 building. The 2006 expansion kept the original look and earned a Maine Preservation award in 2007.
In 2012, the library opened a Media Lab with computers, cameras, scanners and other digital tools, and a cafe operates on the ground floor. The Teen Summer Reading Program started in 2003 and has grown into one of the state’s largest teen programs, with strong support from Friends groups and library staff. Teens remain a central part of Auburn Public Library.
