Abreus, Cuba
Abreus is a town and municipality in Cuba’s Cienfuegos Province. It was founded in 1840 as San Segundo de los Abreu by Trinidadian landowners during a sugar cane boom that used enslaved labor. The municipality includes Abreus and several nearby villages, such as Babiney, Carmelina, Cayo Grande, Charcas, and Juraguá.
Abreus borders the Ciénaga de Zapata area and Calimete in Matanzas Province, and is adjacent to Aguada de Pasajeros, Rodas, and Cienfuegos. In 2019, about 30,700 people lived there. The area covers roughly 579 square kilometers, with a population density of around 53 people per square kilometer. The town sits about 60 meters above sea level.
