Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States is a drill manual written by Inspector General Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben during the American Revolutionary War. Hired to train American troops at Valley Forge, Steuben formed a model company of 100 men who then trained other soldiers, so the whole army followed the same procedures as the first company. He published the drill instructions as a manual in 1779, which was widely used by the Continental Army. The manual came to be known as the Army's "Blue Book" and remained the official U.S. military guide until 1812.
