Asemospiza is a genus of South American birds in the tanager family Thraupidae. They were formerly placed in the genus Tiaris. A 2014 molecular study showed that Tiaris was polyphyletic, so two species were moved to a new genus, Asemospiza, with the Sooty Grassquit (Asemospiza fuliginosa) as the type species. The name comes from Greek: asēmos meaning "without marks" and spiza meaning "finch." These birds are in the subfamily Coerebinae and form a sister group to Darwin's finches. The genus contains two species, including the Sooty Grassquit.
