The Grizzlies’ 22nd NBA season began with a coaching change. After a first‑round exit in 2015–16, they fired head coach Dave Joerger on May 7, 2016 and hired David Fizdale on May 29, 2016.

After the season, several players left: Zach Randolph signed with the Sacramento Kings, Vince Carter also left, and Tony Allen signed with the New Orleans Pelicans. This was the Grizzlies’ last playoff appearance until the 2020–21 season.
