The Arctic rockling, also called the silver rockling or Arctic threebeard, is a small fish found in very cold waters of the northeastern Atlantic. It grows up to about 35 cm (14 inches) long. The fish has two dorsal fins and one anal fin, and the first ray of the front dorsal fin is elongated into a whisker-like barb. Its colors change with age: adults are brown-red on top and pink on the belly, with a blue tint around the head and red barbels and fin tips; young fish are silvery. The Arctic rockling lives on the seabed, over gravel, mud, or sand, at depths of about 150–500 meters (490–1,640 feet). It feeds on small crustaceans such as decapods, amphipods, and euphausiids, and on small fish.
