Anando Mukerjee

Anando Mukerjee (born 14 April 1977 in Patna, India) is an Indian opera tenor and deacon in the Church of England. He is widely regarded as India’s finest tenor and the only internationally recognized Indian operatic tenor. He also serves as a self-supporting curate at St James Church, Muswell Hill.

Education and training: Mukerjee studied Zoology at Delhi University and Natural Sciences at Cambridge University as an Inlaks scholar. He trained in London and spent seven years studying under Swedish tenor Nicolai Gedda. He received the Charles Wallace India Trust British Council Award in 2001 and was a finalist in the UK National Mozart Competition in 2007 and the Wagner Society Bayreuth Bursary Competition in 2012.

Career highlights: His operatic debut came in 2006 as Rodolfo in La Bohème at Belgrade National Opera, invited by Princess Elizabeth of Yugoslavia. He has since performed many roles across the UK and beyond, including significant performances in Italy, and at venues such as Cadogan Hall, the Kennedy Center in Washington, and the Al-Madinat Opera House in Dubai. His recital work includes Wigmore Hall and appearances on BBC Radio 3 In Tune. He also premiered Ian Venables’ Venetian Songs with the Orchestra of St. John Bromsgrove.

Ordinand and current ministry: Mukerjee trained for ordination at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford, completing his studies in 2025. He was ordained a deacon by the Bishop of Ebbsfleet on 30 June 2025 and now serves at St James Church, Muswell Hill.
