Al Gamble
Al Gamble is an American musician known for playing the Hammond B-3 organ and keyboards. Born John Allen Gamble Jr. on March 11, 1969, in Columbus, Georgia, he grew up in Tuscumbia, Alabama, and moved to Memphis in 1994 to pursue music. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1991.
Gamble is a prolific session player based in Memphis. He helped form the Gamble Brothers Band in 2001 with his brother Chad Gamble, Art Edmaiston, and Will Lowrimore, releasing three albums between 2001 and 2007. The band won the Billboard Independent Music World Series in 2003. He later played with The Grip and The City Champs, and was part of the project Luna ’68, released in 2021.
In 2013, Gamble joined St. Paul and The Broken Bones as their keyboardist after adding organ overdubs to their debut album Half The City. The band has toured widely in the U.S. and Europe, opened for The Rolling Stones in 2015, and performed at Carnegie Hall in 2016. Gamble also played at Elton John’s AIDS Foundation Academy Awards viewing party in 2017.
His work has appeared in film and television, including MTV’s $5 Cover and the documentary I Am A Man. The City Champs’ music and members have been featured in Take Me To The River, a Memphis-focused music film released in 2014. Gamble and his brother Chad are honored as Music Achievers in the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. He currently lives in Memphis.
