Buccinum glaciale
Buccinum glaciale (Linnaeus, 1761) is a sea snail in the true whelk family Buccinidae. The shell can reach about 90 mm in length and is oval-conical in shape. Its color ranges from reddish fawn to mauve or brown, with many transverse grooves and sharp spiral lines.
The spire has seven to eight whorls, which bear thick, knobby folds that are more noticeable on the upper whorls and less so on the body whorl. The body whorl is typically marked by one or two strong convex keels. The oval cream-colored aperture opens upward and is deeply notched at the base. The outer lip is white, thick, flaring, and curves back, with a slight notch near the top. The siphonal canal is short, and the columella is white and wavy.
This cold-water species lives in polar and near-polar waters. It is found in the intertidal zone in various cold regions, including areas around Japan, Alaska, Arctic Canada, Spitzbergen, and the Northwest Atlantic Ocean.
