Jack Troy
Jack Troy was an Australian rugby league winger who played in the early 1950s. Born on 1 August 1927 in Forster, New South Wales, he was the son of a jockey and began as a professional runner before turning to rugby league.
He started his top-level career with Newtown in 1949, playing until 1952. In 34 appearances for Newtown, he scored 37 tries (111 points). Troy set a Newtown record by scoring six tries in a single match against Eastern Suburbs in 1950, a feat not matched in Australia for 71 years. That year he was the NSWRFL’s top try-scorer with 16 tries.
In representative play, Troy appeared for New South Wales in 1950 (three games, four tries) and earned two caps for Australia in 1950. He was part of the Australian side that won the Ashes for the first time in 30 years, playing in the first and third tests. He is listed as Kangaroo No. 276.
Troy moved to Eastern Suburbs in 1953, but a persistent leg injury limited him to three games, after which he retired from playing. He is recognized as the 410th player for Newtown Jets and the 415th for the Eastern Suburbs club.
After his playing days, Troy served as chairman of selectors at the St. George Dragons. He passed away on 20 January 1995, aged 66.
