A. T. M. Nazimullah Chowdhury
A. T. M. Nazimullah Chowdhury is a retired Bangladeshi diplomat who served as ambassador to three countries: Turkey (1998–2002), Russia (2002–2005), and the United Arab Emirates (2006–2008). He joined the Bangladeshi Civil Service on 21 December 1974. Earlier in his career, he was the second secretary at Bangladesh’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva and worked with the UN Mission; he also served as a consul at the Bangladeshi embassy in Rome in the 1980s.
In Russia, he took office on 9 August 2002, succeeding S. K. Sharjil Hassan, and served until 6 February 2005, when Amir Hussein Sikder succeeded him. In Turkey, he served from 25 November 1998 to 3 August 2002, succeeding Mahboob Alam and later being replaced by ATM Nazrul Islam. In the United Arab Emirates, he was ambassador from 20 February 2006 until March 2008, after which Md. Nazmul Quaunine replaced him in June 2008.
In May 2008 a corruption case was filed against Chowdhury by the Anti-Corruption Commission. On 16 November 2008 a special court sentenced him to five years in prison for allegedly embezzling state funds for personal purchases. His lawyers argued that a High Court stay order was in effect. In April 2010 the Appellate Division ordered him to surrender to the trial court, noting that as a fugitive he was not entitled to legal relief without surrender. In August 2013 the High Court Division upheld a three-year prison sentence after rejecting his appeal.
