8th Battalion (Australia)

The 8th Battalion was an infantry unit of the Australian Army. It was formed in 1914 for the First Australian Imperial Force, drawing volunteers mainly from Victoria and serving with the 2nd Brigade of the 1st Division.

World War I
- Fought at Gallipoli, including the Anzac Cove landing on 25 April 1915, and later on the Western Front in France and Belgium.
- Took part in major battles such as Pozières, Ypres, and Amiens.
- Suffered heavy casualties: about 877 killed and 2,410 wounded.
- Three soldiers were awarded the Victoria Cross: Thomas Cooke, William Joynt, and Robert Beatham.
- The battalion was disbanded in 1919 after the war.

Interwar and World War II
- Re-raised in 1921 as a Militia battalion in Victoria, inheriting the AIF’s colours and battle honours.
- Became the 8th Battalion (City of Ballarat Regiment) in 1927, with units in Ballarat and surrounding towns.
- At the start of World War II it trained for home defence, later serving in Northern Australia with the 23rd Brigade.
- Was stationed in Darwin, trained on the Atherton Tablelands, and then moved to Emirau Island to work with Allied forces.
- In 1945 the battalion joined the Bougainville campaign, where Private Frank John Partridge earned the Victoria Cross.
- The battalion was finally disbanded on 2 May 1946.

Postwar and today
- Re-raised in 1948 as part of the Citizens Military Force and later merged with the 7th Battalion to form the 8th/7th Battalion, the North Western Victorian Regiment.
- Today this unit is the 8th/7th Battalion, Royal Victoria Regiment (8/7 RVR) in the Australian Army Reserve, which continues the 8th’s battle honours and traditions.
