77 Sunset Strip is an American private detective crime drama that aired on ABC from October 10, 1958, to February 7, 1964. It was created by Roy Huggins and starred Efrem Zimbalist Jr. as Stuart Bailey and Roger Smith as Jeff Spencer, two detectives who run a firm from offices on 77 Sunset Strip in West Hollywood. The show followed alternating cases, with Bailey and Spencer sometimes teaming up, and it featured a colorful cast around them.

Key characters included Suzanne Fabry (Jacqueline Beer), who runs the Sunset Answering Service next door; Roscoe the racetrack tout (Louis Quinn) providing humor and tips; and Lt. Roy Gilmore (Byron Keith), the police contact. The popular street-smart kid Kookie (Edd Byrnes) started as a parking valet at Dino’s Lodge next to the office and later became a full partner in the firm. The opening episodes often focused on Bailey or Spencer, with the other hero joining in as needed.

The show mixed serious detective work with a breezy, stylish mood. Its catchy theme song by Mack David and Jerry Livingston helped define the feel, and a 1959 album of the music became a hit. 77 Sunset Strip also sparked three spin-offs—Surfside 6 in Miami Beach, Hawaiian Eye in Honolulu, and Bourbon Street Beat in New Orleans—sharing the same detective vibe and even crossing over on occasion.

In 1963, as ratings declined, Jack Webb took over as executive producer and William Conrad became a producer/director. The series shifted to a darker tone with Bailey as a solo private investigator and a redesigned set, moving away from the original office and Dino’s Lodge. The sixth season began in 1963 but was canceled in early 1964, although reruns continued for years.

The show left a lasting mark on television and popular culture, notably through Kookie’s slang and popular songs. It also inspired several unusual episodes, including The Silent Caper, which had no dialogue, and Reserved for Mr. Bailey, featuring Zimbalist alone for an hour. A 1990s revival was discussed, and a pilot was filmed, but it never aired.
