2023 Pakistan floods: a short, simple summary
What happened
From March to July 2023, heavy monsoon rains caused widespread flooding in Pakistan. The floods affected three main provinces: Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Punjab. By July, at least 159 people were killed and 264 injured. Millions were affected, with many homes damaged or destroyed.
Where the floods hit
- Balochistan: Flooding began in March, killing people in several districts. In April, floods killed four more people, and in July, six more deaths were reported.
- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Between March and April, 11 people died. In June, more than 20 people died and about 100 were injured, including 15 in the Bannu District. Eight children were among those killed in a landslide in Shangla District in July.
- Punjab: In early July, 19 people died in Lahore from electrocution or collapsing roofs. From July 6–9, a total of 52 people died across Punjab due to flooding.

- The floods were caused by heavy monsoon rains that returned to Pakistan after the previous year’s flooding.
