Lahore has a diverse economy that includes telecommunications, information technology, manufacturing, engineering, pharmaceuticals, steel, chemicals, and construction materials.
GDP and economy size
- As of 2019, Lahore’s GDP (purchasing power parity, PPP) was about $84 billion.
- In 2008, Lahore’s PPP GDP was around $40 billion, with projections to reach about $102 billion by 2025.
- Lahore contributes roughly 11.5% to Pakistan’s total economy and about 19% to Punjab’s economy. Punjab’s economy is one of the largest subdivisions in the country, at about $115 billion.
Industries and jobs
- Lahore is Pakistan’s second-largest financial hub, with major industrial areas like Kot Lakhpat and the Sundar Industrial Estate.
- The city has about 9,000 industrial units and has shifted in recent decades from manufacturing to services.
- About 42% of Lahore’s workforce works in finance, real estate, and other services.
- Lahore is the country’s largest center for software production and hosts a growing computer-assembly industry.
Small-scale industries
- Lahore is a key hub for handmade carpets, a leading export product for Pakistan.
- Carpet making is a major cottage industry, with designers at the Lahore Design Centre creating new patterns and motifs.
Projects and development
- The Lahore Expo Centre is under construction.
- Defence Raya Golf Resort is a large 400-acre residential and commercial development around an 18-hole golf course, a joint venture between DHA Lahore and BRDB Malaysia.
- Large projects like these are expected to boost Lahore’s economy and benefit the country.
