Liverpool's 2014–15 season was the club’s 123rd year and 53rd in the top flight, and their 23rd in the Premier League. Owned by Fenway Sports Group, with Tom Werner as chairman and Brendan Rodgers as manager, they played at Anfield. In addition to the Premier League, they competed in the FA Cup, League Cup and the UEFA Champions League, their first stay in Europe’s top competition since 2009–10. After finishing third in their Champions League group, they dropped into the UEFA Europa League, reaching the Round of 32.

This was captain Steven Gerrard’s final season with Liverpool, ending a 17-year spell. Liverpool had sold star striker Luis Suárez in the summer and spent about £117 million on ten new signings. The season started with high hopes, but the team’s form quickly deteriorated. Without Suárez, they collected only 28 points from 57, their worst league start for around 50 years, and ended the calendar year in 8th place.

They were eliminated from the Champions League in the group stage, but a 12-match unbeaten run after the New Year lifted hopes of a return to Europe’s top competition. A later slump brought only two wins in their last eight league games, ending their pursuit of a top-four finish and leaving them to qualify for the Europa League in 2015–16, helped by Arsenal’s FA Cup Final win.

Liverpool reached the semi-finals of both the League Cup and the FA Cup, losing to Chelsea and Aston Villa, respectively. In transfers, the club spent £117 million in the summer, with no winter spending, and earned about £88.7 million from sales, giving a net spend of around £28 million.

Steven Gerrard was the top scorer, with 9 league goals and 13 in all competitions. The season featured a mix of disappointment and recovery, ending with a Europa League place and a foundation for changes to come.
