Akpan Utuk was a colonel in the Biafran Army during the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970). A member of the Ibibio people from southeastern Nigeria, he joined the Biafran forces in 1967 and quickly rose to command the 16th Division. He is best known for his role in Owerri, helping defend the city against Nigerian forces in 1968 and then recapturing it after seven months of fighting. After Owerri was retaken, he was ordered to help retake Umuahia, which he did in April 1969. The war ended with Biafra’s surrender in January 1970, and Utuk was last seen at a party in Lagos in early 1970; there is no public record of his fate afterward.
