1986–87 Australian region cyclone season

This season was below average and was the latest starting season on record. It officially ran from 1 November 1986 to 30 April 1987, with the last system dissipating on 27 May 1987.

Strongest storm
- Cyclone Elsie: reached about 215 km/h (130 mph) winds with a central pressure near 940 hPa. It formed near Western Australia and made landfall in the same region, causing catastrophic damage at Mandora Station.

Notable storms and activity
- 07S: January 9–13, a tropical storm in the northwest part of the basin. It wasn’t monitored by the BOM but was considered a tropical storm by the JTWC.
- Connie: January 15–23. Made landfall near Port Hedland on January 19 with moderate damage reported in Port Hedland and Whim Creek.
- Irma: January 19–22 in the Gulf of Carpentaria.
- Damien: January 30–February 9, near Western Australia.
- Jason: February, affected the Northern Territory and damaged about 20 buildings.
- Veli: The precursor to Cyclone Uma formed February 4 near Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, moved east and into the South Pacific on February 7, where it was named Veli.
- Elsie: February 21–27, formed near Western Australia and caused major damage around the region.
- Kay: April 6–17, impacted Papua New Guinea and Western Australia.
- Blanch: May 22–27, entered the Australian region on May 22 and dissipated off the east coast of Australia on May 27.
