The 1977–78 season was Kilmarnock's 76th in the Scottish League. They finished 6th in the Scottish First Division. Manager Willie Fernie led the team until October 1977, with Davie Sneddon taking over from October.

In cup competitions, Kilmarnock reached the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup and were knocked out in the second round of the Scottish League Cup.

Donnie McDowell was the top scorer, with 13 league goals and 15 in all competitions. The highest home attendance was 5,154 for the game against Queen of the South on 2 January, while the lowest was 1,328 against East Fife on 29 April. The average home league attendance was 2,862, lower than the previous season.
