Greenfield Township, Huron County, Ohio
Greenfield Township is one of 19 townships in Huron County, Ohio. It sits in the western part of the county, near the city of Willard. The center of the township includes the unincorporated community of Steuben, and part of the Holiday Lakes area is also within its boundaries. The township covers about 25.6 square miles, mostly land, with a small amount of water. The elevation is about 869 feet. The population was 1,320 at the 2020 census, for a density of around 52 people per square mile.
Greenfield Township was organized in 1815. It is named after Greenfield Hill, a historic neighborhood in Fairfield, Connecticut. There are other Greenfield Townships in Ohio, located in Fairfield and Gallia counties.
Government-wise, Greenfield Township is governed by a three-member board of trustees. Trustees are elected in November of odd-numbered years to four-year terms, starting January 1. Two trustees are elected in the year after a presidential election, and one is elected in the year before it. There is also an elected township fiscal officer, serving a four-year term beginning April 1 of the year after the election (held in November of the year before the presidential election). Vacancies on the board or in the fiscal officership are filled by the remaining trustees.
