The 1971–72 season for Ajax was one of the most remarkable in football history. Under manager Stefan Kovács, Ajax won the treble: the Eredivisie title, the KNVB Cup, and the European Cup. It was also Ajax’s first season without Rinus Michels since 1965, marking a new era for the club. Jaap van Praag was the chairman, and the team played home games at Amsterdam’s Olympic Stadium.

How the season went
- Ajax were incredibly dominant, losing only one game all season and remaining unbeaten at home in both domestic and European competition.
- A standout result was a 12–1 victory over Vitesse in the Eredivisie, a record win that stood for decades (until 2020, when Ajax beat VVV-Venlo 13–0).
- In the Eredivisie, Ajax finished as champions. They also won the KNVB Cup and captured the European Cup, beating Inter Milan 2–0 in the final.

Key players
- Johan Cruyff was the club’s standout star, finishing with 25 league goals (33 in all competitions) and playing a crucial role throughout the season.
- Other important players included Johan Neeskens, Piet Keizer, Sjaak Swart, Ruud Krol, Wim Suurbier, Arie Haan, Johnny Rep, and Dick van Dijk.

Transfers
- The club brought in several players to strengthen the squad, notably Arnold Mühren from Volendam and Heinz Schilcher from Sturm Graz.
- Departures included Velibor Vasović (retired) and Nico Rijnders, among others, as Ajax rebuilt after Michels’ departure. The season also featured some players leaving or returning to smaller teams.

Season in brief
- Eredivisie: Winners (1st place)
- KNVB Cup: Winners
- European Cup: Winners (Europa’s top club competition)
- Top scorer: Johan Cruyff (League 25; All competitions 33)
- Notable achievement: Unbeaten home record in domestic and European play; 12–1 win over Vitesse set a league record for many years

Legacy
This season cemented Ajax’s status as a dominant European powerhouse and marked the beginning of a new chapter after Michels. The 1971–72 Ajax team is remembered for its near-flawless performance across all competitions, its combination of skill and teamwork, and its influence on football philosophy in the years that followed.
