Zoran Bečić (April 2, 1939 – March 29, 2006) was a prominent Bosnian theatre artist and a founding actor of the Sarajevo War Theatre. He studied acting at the Belgrade Academy of Dramatic Arts, graduating in 1966. Bečić began his career in Dubrovnik, then joined Sarajevo’s Malo pozorište, the predecessor of Kamerni teatar 55, debuting in Noć ubica. In 1971 he briefly went to Belgrade but returned to Sarajevo’s National Theatre two years later. For about twenty years he worked with Kamerni teatar 55 and won three Zlatni lovorov vijenac awards at the MESS festival, with the 2004 prize recognizing his life’s work. During the 1991-1995 siege of Sarajevo, Bečić helped start the city’s war-time theatre by taking part in Sklonište and directing Memoari Mine Hauzen. He once said he would do it again, staying in Sarajevo during the war. His film and TV work includes Viza za budućnost (2002) and Aleksa Santic (1990). In March 2006 he performed with his daughter Zorana Bečić in Lutkino bespuće, his first and last appearance; he died two weeks later on the eve of the premiere of Rodoljupci at Sarajevo’s National Theatre, where he was Director of Drama. He is buried at Sarajevo’s Lav cemetery.
