Youth Justice Coalition (YJC) is a nonprofit based in Los Angeles that works to reform juvenile justice and reduce the use of prisons and police. The group aims to challenge inequality based on race, gender, and class in California’s youth and criminal justice systems.

YJC has worked to end gang injunctions that affect young people in minority communities and helped block an injunction in Imperial Courts Housing Projects in the early 2000s. In 2015, they joined others in opposing a $2 billion jail expansion proposed by Los Angeles County.

Kim McGill of YJC has argued for mental health services in the community instead of jail for mentally ill people. In 2014, YJC published a report on police-involved killings and urged Kamala Harris to appoint special prosecutors for such cases.

That year, they organized a “Die In” protest at the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors building, drawing about 400 people who carried cardboard coffins to symbolize police killings. YJC has also challenged Los Angeles Unified School District policies that use random metal detector searches, saying these policies erode trust between students and staff.

They are part of the Students Not Suspects campaign, working with groups like the ACLU, Black Lives Matter, and Public Counsel.
