Nanette Barragán

Nanette Díaz Barragán is an American politician and attorney who has represented California’s 44th congressional district in the U.S. House since 2017. Born in 1976 in Los Angeles and raised by Mexican immigrant parents in Torrance, she is the youngest of 11 siblings. She earned a BA in political science from UCLA and a JD from USC. Barragán worked in nonprofits, government, and law, including time in the Clinton White House and with the NAACP, and she served as Hermosa Beach’s first Latina council member in 2013. She left the city council in 2015 to run for Congress and won the seat in 2016. She was reelected in 2018 and 2020. In 2023 she became chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, though the group faced staffing challenges. Her policy focus includes a strong pro-choice stance and support for refinery safety measures such as banning hydrofluoric acid. She is a Dodgers fan who enjoys baseball and softball and is Catholic.
