Your Cheatin' Heart is a six-part British comedy-drama made by BBC Scotland. It first aired in 1990 and was written by John Byrne. The cast includes Tilda Swinton as Cissie Crouch, John Gordon-Sinclair as journalist Frank McClusky, Ken Stott as Fraser Boyle, Katy Murphy as Billie, Eddi Reader as Jolene Jowett, and others.

Plot in simple terms:
Cissie Crouch runs an American-style bar in Glasgow with her husband Dorwood, who is in prison for a robbery she believes he didn’t commit. To help clear his name, she teams up with McClusky, who investigates Boyle, a violent drug dealer connected to Dorwood’s past band and to the Wild Bunch and an Irish musician group. Cissie’s child, taken into care in Aberdeen, adds to the stakes.

To blend into the country-and-western scene, McClusky uses a taxi run by Billie and Jolene — the McPhail Sisters, who want a big acting break. Tensions rise as drugs, murders, and rival gangs swirl around a major concert at a roadside venue called the Ponderosa. A series of abductions, escapes, and double-crosses leads to a chaotic finale where several fates hang in the balance. The ending is open, with relationships strained and the characters’ futures unresolved.

Reception and legacy:
Scottish critics generally praised the show for its wit and cleverness, while some London critics found it hard to follow. John Byrne later said the series had a loyal following of around three-and-a-half million viewers in the UK. It was revived for cinema screenings in 2013 and 2014, and finally released on double DVD in 2015. The series was repeated on BBC Scotland in 2019.

Music:
Many scenes feature country and western songs performed by the cast in small pubs and clubs. The music was directed by Rab Noakes and Michael Marra, with backing tracks recorded and vocals performed live on location. A soundtrack album and cassette were released, with songs credited to the characters rather than the performers. “From a Distance” was sung by Swinton in the series, but on the CD it is performed by Eddi Reader as Jolene Jowett.
