T. M. Jobaer
T. M. Jobaer, also known as Tariq Mohammed Jobaer (Bengali: তারিক মোহাম্মদ জোবায়ের), is a retired Major General of the Bangladesh Army who led the National Security Intelligence (NSI), Bangladesh’s main civil intelligence agency, from July 2018 to March 2024.
Key points
- 1987–2024: Served in the Bangladesh Army and later moved to NSI under the Prime Minister’s Office.
- 2011: Served as Director of the National Security Intelligence.
- Before becoming NSI Director General, he was the Minister (Counsellor) at the Bangladesh High Commission in the United Kingdom.
- July 31, 2018: Appointed Director General of NSI, replacing Md Shamsul Haque.
- As NSI director, he focused on counter-terrorism and, in a The Outlook interview, named Hizb ut-Tahrir as the biggest terror threat in South Asia.
- 2021: Gave the welcome speech at the opening of NSI’s new headquarters, opened by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
- November 2023: Still serving as Director General of NSI.
- After a change in government, a travel ban was imposed on him; in April 2025 his and his wife’s bank accounts were frozen by court order.
