York Factory First Nation
York Factory First Nation, Cree name ᑭᐢᒋ ᐚᐢᑳᐦᐃᑲᐣ (Kischi Wáskáhikan), is a Swampy Cree community in northern Manitoba, Canada. It is also known as York Landing First Nation or York Factory Cree Nation. The main reserve is York Landing, located on the eastern bank of the Nelson River, about halfway between Lake Winnipeg and Hudson Bay, roughly 116 kilometres from Thompson.
As of 2023, the total population is 1,566: 371 on reserve, 74 on other land, and 1,121 off reserve. The York Landing reserve covers 11.18 square kilometres (4.32 square miles).
History and land:
- After the Hudson’s Bay Company closed the York Factory site in 1957, the Swampy Cree were moved to York Landing.
- In 1986, Canada transferred about 9.67 square kilometres of land to the First Nation.
- York Landing gained official reserve status in 1989.
- The York Landing reserve had about 443 residents in 2016, with 138 dwellings.
Governance:
- York Factory First Nation is governed by a chief and four councillors and is part of the Keewatin Tribal Council.
- The current Chief is Darryl Wastesicoot.
The community is served by the York Landing Airport.
