Yatomi
Yatomi (弥富市, Yatomi-shi) is a city in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. As of December 1, 2019, about 44,589 people lived there in 18,185 households, with a population density of 910 people per square kilometer. The city covers 49.0 square kilometers.
Location and climate
Yatomi is in western Aichi, on coastal flatlands. It borders Mie Prefecture to the west and has a short coastline along Mikawa Bay to the southeast. The area has hot, humid summers and relatively mild winters. The average yearly temperature is about 15.6°C, and it receives about 1,677 mm of rain each year, with September being the wettest month. Average highs are around 27.7°C in August, and average lows around 4.5°C in January.
History
Yatomi’s name appears in Kamakura-period documents as part of ancient Owari Province. During the Edo period, the area was known for ornamental goldfish. In the Meiji period, it became part of villages in Kasai District, later Ama District. Yatomi became a town on August 26, 1903. The Isewan Typhoon of 1959 caused extensive damage. A merger with neighboring Kanie failed in 2004 over a naming dispute. The city of Yatomi was founded on April 1, 2006, by merging the former town of Yatomi with the village of Jūshiyama.
Government
Yatomi uses a mayor-council form of government. The mayor is directly elected, and the city has a unicameral legislature with 16 members. The city sends two members to the Aichi Prefectural Assembly and is part of Aichi District 9 for national elections.
Education
The city has eight public elementary schools, three public junior high schools, and one public high school run by the prefecture. There is also one private high school.
Economy
Yatomi is a regional commercial center and is known for greenhouse farming. Major products include rice, wheat, lettuce, tomatoes, and carnations.
