YMCA Building, Singapore
The YMCA Building on Orchard Road in Singapore is the headquarters of the YMCA of Singapore and also houses the YMCA @ One Orchard hotel for visitors. Plans for a new YMCA headquarters began in 1969, and after several revisions, approval came in 1979 for a nine-storey building on Orchard Road. The old YMCA Building, which had served as the Kenpeitai headquarters during the Japanese occupation, was demolished in 1981 to make way for the new construction. Fund-raising started that year and continued into the next. The new YMCA Building officially opened on 24 November 1984, inaugurated by the Minister for Law, Edmund William Barker. It remains the YMCA’s headquarters and provides hotel accommodation at YMCA @ One Orchard for tourists and travelers.
