Y Byd ar Bedwar
Y Byd ar Bedwar is a Welsh-language current affairs TV programme that has aired on S4C since November 1982. Made by ITV Cymru Wales, it sends reporters around the world to bring stories back to Wales.
Over the years it has secured big moments, including Tweli Griffiths’ interview with Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and coverage of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Chernobyl disaster, and the Persian Gulf War. The team has also won exclusive Welsh stories, such as interviews with Sion Aubrey Roberts (the only person jailed over the Meibion Glyndwr arson campaign) and with Ryan James, a man wrongly jailed for his wife’s murder.
Domestic investigations include undercover work into puppy farms in west Wales, which led to calls for changes in Welsh law. Reporter Eifion Glyn travelled undercover to Zimbabwe in 2008 and to Afghanistan in 2013 to document life under Mugabe’s rule and the experiences of Welsh troops fighting the Taliban.
A raw portrayal of Cardiff heroin addicts won Best Current Affairs at the 2009 Celtic Media Festival, and a 2013 Anglesey heroin investigation won BAFTA Cymru. The programme carried a moving interview with the grandparents of April Jones after her disappearance in 2012. BAFTA Cymru recognised the show again in 2014 for Typhoon Haiyan coverage and in 2015 for highlighting gaps in mental health provision for young people in Wales.
