Fratton Traincare Depot
Fratton Traincare Depot is a railway maintenance depot in Portsmouth, Hampshire, next to Fratton station. It has a carriage washer and is the fuel point for Class 158 and 159 DMUs. The depot includes a train shed with two maintenance tracks. At night, trains for maintenance sit at Portsmouth & Southsea station, mainly Class 444 and 450 Desiro EMUs, with Class 158 and 159 DMUs occasionally staying there too. Great Western Railway and Southern can stop there to use the depot if needed.
History: The depot opened in 1891, built by the Great Western Railway and the London and South Western Railway as a double roundhouse, replacing an earlier facility at Portsmouth Town. It came under Southern Railway in 1923 and British Railways in 1948. It was badly damaged by bombs in World War II but rebuilt by 1948. It closed as a depot on 2 November 1959, though the building continued to be used for stabling for several years and was demolished in 1969.
In 1987, the depot housed EMUs of Classes 412, 421 and 423, and other locomotives (Classes 08, 09, 33 and 47) could often be seen there.
On 5 August 2021, around 01:30, a Class 444 derailed during shunting, blocking access to the depot and disrupting Great Western Railway, South Western Railway and Southern services.
