2019–20 British Basketball League season
The 2019–20 BBL season was the 33rd season of Britain’s top professional basketball league, featuring 12 teams from England and Scotland. The season introduced a revamped format, with a newly structured BBL Cup and a 22-game regular-season Championship. London City Royals withdrew in January, and their 1–3 record was expunged. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the season was postponed in March 2020 and then cancelled on 1 June 2020, with no league or playoffs champions declared.
Key points
- Cup: The BBL Cup started in September with two groups (North and South). The top four from each group moved to the quarter-finals, followed by two-legged semi-finals and a final at Arena Birmingham on 26 January 2020. Worcester Wolves won the Cup, their first title.
- Championship: All 12 teams played each other twice, home and away, for 22 regular-season games from December to March. The playoffs and final at the O2 Arena in London were canceled, so no league champion was named.
- Trophy: The BBL Trophy kept its 2018–19 format, with 12 BBL teams plus four invited sides (Solent Kestrels, Worthing Thunder, Dunfermline Reign, Basketball Wales). The final was held at Emirates Arena in Glasgow (Newcastle Eagles won the Trophy, their 7th title).
