World Business Council for Sustainable Development
World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) is a CEO‑led network of more than 200 international companies working to advance sustainable development. It was founded in 1995 in Geneva by Stephan Schmidheiny and is headquartered at Maison de la Paix in Geneva, with offices in New York and New Delhi. The council connects with about 60 national and regional business councils and partner organizations, and its members join by invitation. WBCSD aims to help the world meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by transforming six economic systems: circular economy; cities and mobility; climate and energy; food, land and water; and people and redefining value. Each system operates as a WBCSD program with related projects. The organization is led by CEO and President Peter Bakker. WBCSD has been described as an influential forum for corporate sustainability, though it has faced criticism about the influence of large carbon‑intensive companies on its leadership. Its Vision 2050 report was highlighted by The Guardian as a major, concerted corporate sustainability effort.
