Beaver River (Canada)
Beaver River is a large river in east-central Alberta and central Saskatchewan, Canada. It starts at Beaver Lake near Lac La Biche, Alberta, and flows east into Saskatchewan. It then turns north and empties into Lac Île-à-la-Crosse on the Churchill River, which flows into Hudson Bay. The river is about 491 km long and drains a watershed of roughly 14,500 square kilometres in Alberta. It is part of the Churchill River drainage basin.
Along its course, the Beaver River passes through boreal forest and crosses near Alberta and Saskatchewan highways. In Saskatchewan it receives waters from several lakes and rivers, including the Amisk River, Minnistikwan Lake outflow, Meadow Lake, Green Lake’s Green River, Cowan River, Waterhen River, and Doré River, before reaching Lac Île-à-la-Crosse.
The Beaver River basin includes several provincial parks on the Alberta side (Lakeland, Moose Lake, Cold Lake) and Meadow Lake Provincial Park in Saskatchewan. Saskatchewan has three recreation sites along the river: Beaver/Cowan Rivers Recreation Site, Beatty Lake Recreation Site, and Beaver River Recreation Site.
Common fish found in the river include walleye, sauger, yellow perch, northern pike, lake trout, lake whitefish, cisco, white sucker, longnose sucker, and burbot.
