Kotha Bangaru Lokam
Kotha Bangaru Lokam (A New Golden World) is a 2008 Telugu romantic drama directed by debutant Srikanth Addala and produced by Dil Raju. It stars Varun Sandesh as Balu and Shweta Basu Prasad as Swapna, with Prakash Raj and Jayasudha in supporting roles. The film’s music was composed by Mickey J Meyer, with cinematography by Chota K. Naidu and editing by Marthand K. Venkatesh. It released on 9 October 2008 and was a commercial success, winning two Nandi Awards and five Filmfare Awards South.
Plot
Balu, from a humble middle-class family, and Swapna, from a wealthy, strict family, study at a residential college in Visakhapatnam. They fall in love, but their different backgrounds and a newspaper photo create trouble. Balu lies to his parents about his studies, and he tries to bring his father to the college to meet Swapna. Swapna’s parents arrange another marriage for her. Balu’s father learns the truth and believes in handling children with love, but he dies in a train accident as Swapna runs away. Four years later, Balu and Swapna realize that true love requires patience. Their families come to accept them, and they reunite.
Music and release
The soundtrack, scored by Mickey J Meyer, was released on 23 August 2008. The launch event took place at the State Art Gallery in Hyderabad and was attended by stars like Jr. NTR, Prabhas, and Allu Arjun. The film’s popularity led to a Kannada remake, Cheluvina Chilipili (2009), directed by S. Narayan and starring Pankaj and Roopika.
Reception
critics praised the film’s freshness and performances. Rediff.com gave it 3/5, noting an interesting screenplay for a familiar story and praising Varun Sandesh and Shweta Prasad for their lively performances. Idlebrain.com gave 4/5, calling Addala’s debut a refreshing take on a common theme.
