Wilfred Kiboro
Wilfred David Kiboro, born on 7 August 1944, is a Kenyan entrepreneur, philanthropist, and golfer. He is best known for leading Nation Media Group (NMG) as its group chief executive officer from 1995 to 2006. Kiboro was born in Kiambu County, Kenya, and studied civil engineering at the University of Nairobi.
He began his career with Shell International as a technical sales engineer, later becoming a technical sales manager for East and Central Africa. In 1974 he joined Esso Kenya as a supply, planning and economics manager, eventually taking on roles such as personnel director and sales/marketing director. In 1987 he joined Xerox Kenya and became managing director in 1989, a post he held until he moved to Nation Media Group in 1993 as managing director designate of The Nation.
At NMG, Kiboro helped launch The East African newspaper in 1994. He became group CEO in 1995 and led the company’s growth into broadcasting with Nation FM in 1999 and Nation TV. Under his leadership, NMG expanded across East Africa with divisions in newspapers, broadcasting, publishing, and distribution. He retired as CEO in 2006 but remained as chairman of the board.
Kiboro has held international roles, including chairing the International Press Institute in Kenya and the East African Business Summit, and serving on the Rhodes Trust Kenya and the International Organization of Employers' Enterprise Advisory Group. He has led environmental and humanitarian projects, such as the Aberdare Forest Fund (2002) and the Nation Turkana Relief Fund (1999/2000).
He has received several awards, including Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear (EBS) and Leadership Shines Through – Africa; he was inducted into the ICT Hall of Fame in 2007. Beyond NMG, he chairs Wilfay Investments and sits on the boards of East African Breweries Limited and Standard Chartered Bank Kenya.
Kiboro is married to Fatuma Kiboro, and they live in Nairobi, Kenya.
