Whirlpool sign (also called the whirl sign) is an imaging finding of twisting around the mesentery. In the abdomen, the bowel may rotate around the mesentery, creating a swirling appearance around the mesenteric vessels. The sign can also appear when an ovary twists its vascular pedicle (ovarian torsion).
